   First Church of Christ, Scientist
               Flint, Michigan

 About Us

Christian Science was founded in 1879 by Mary Baker Eddy. Her purpose was ''To organize a church designed to commemorate the word and works of our Master, [Christ Jesus], which should reinstate primitive Christianity and it's lost element of healing''.

In the spring of 1897 two dedicated Christian Scientists came to Flint, Michigan from Detroit with the sincere desire to sow the seed of Truth and to heal the sick. They held their first Christian Science service in May of that year in a room at 311 East Third Street.

Work progressed and on September 20, 1899 while at 935 Church Street, this group organized as a Christian Science Society. In the spring of 1900, the first public lecture was given by Mrs. Annie M. Knott, who later became the first woman to be a member of The Christian Science Board of Directors.

This group continued to grow and in August 1900 they began holding services in a larger location, the Loyal Guard Building.

In November of 1900, as they continued to grow, these early workers dissolved the Society and formed First Church of Christ, Scientist, Flint, Michigan. The Church card and the names of three public practitioners appeared for the first time under Flint, Michigan in the March 1901 issue of The Christian Science Journal.

Increasing attendance caused the church to continue to move to larger quarters including locations at Second Ward voting precinct, the Patterson Building, the U.C.T. Hall, St. Cecelia Hall and then the Ward Building.

On November 11, 1915, the church dissolved and reorganized as a corporation and then shortly purchased the property at East Court and Harrison Streets. The old structure was removed and the first service was held in the new edifice on March 18, 1917.

As the church continued to grow, additional adjacent property was purchased and a Sunday School building was added in 1956. In 1977 and in 1980 additional property was purchased. In 1987 the Church tore down the old structures and built a new Church and Sunday School (our current structure).

On Sunday, all Christian Science churches throughout the world read the same lesson sermon prepared by the Mother Church in Boston, Massachusetts. This lesson consists of selections from the King James Bible. and Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures by the discoverer and founder of Christian Science Mary Baker Eddy.

At our services, your love of the Bible grows. Your understanding of God increases. And often, as a result, mental and physical problems are permanently healed. We warmly welcome you to our church.
